BW Clearing handles pond construction on house lots, farms and acreage around Melbourne and across Brevard County. As pond builders, we dig earth ponds with a rented excavator and shape the banks to the plan. The work covers fill ponds, farm and stock ponds and fishing ponds.
Every pond starts with three questions: what it is for, where it sits and where the dirt goes. Our site preparation work settles those answers on paper, and the spot is cleared before the dig. Call or text (904) 719-0443 for a free quote.

A fill pond is dug for its dirt, and the hole left behind becomes the pond. That dirt can build up a house pad or fill low spots on the same lot. How much fill the lot needs helps set the pond's size. Spreading and leveling it is part of our excavating and dirt work.
A farm or stock pond goes near the pasture or crop it serves. The extension service says irrigation ponds belong near the crop they water. It also warns against any spot that would catch runoff from a barn lot or a septic drain field.
The pond spot and the fill area are cleared roots and all, as part of our lot and acreage clearing. The tree puller lifts stumps out with the root system, and the excavator takes the biggest ones. That keeps stumps and brush out of the pond dirt.
The extension service says dug ponds work well where water tables are naturally high. Sandy soil may seep too much without that high water, it warns. Many Brevard lots sit on flatwoods sand, and Myakka sand is a common one. In most years, its water table sits less than 18 inches down for 1 to 4 months.
In very dry seasons, that water table falls to more than 40 inches down. The extension service says Florida ponds should be at least 6 to 8 feet deep. Shallow water loses more to evaporation, and water plants are harder to control in it. Summer evaporation can approach 6 inches a month, and those losses belong in the depth plan.
Outside city limits, Brevard County's code caps how steep a finished pond's banks can be. Each foot down needs at least 5 feet across, to a normal water depth of at least 5 feet. No part may sit more than 12 feet below the mean water level. Those gentle banks take room, so a deep pond needs a wide footprint.
Outside city limits, Brevard County's code calls a pond whose dirt stays on the parcel a private lake. A private lake permit is required once all private lakes on one parcel reach three-quarters of an acre. Smaller ponds skip that permit, but the code's location, vegetation and construction rules still apply.
A fill pond keeps its dirt on the lot. Hauling the dirt off the parcel brings in the county's land alteration permit instead. Then even a dig under three-quarters of an acre needs one if it holds water deeper than six feet. On the fill side, minimal fill for a house pad under an approved building permit needs no land alteration permit.
Pond water cannot drain or be pumped into a county stormwater system or onto the parcels around it without permits. That covers water pumped out during the dig too. Inside a city such as Melbourne or Palm Bay, the city's own office answers these questions. As pond contractors, we walk you through which permits apply, and the office makes the call.

We settle the plan for your lot, and we walk you through which permits apply to it. Florida law calls for a Sunshine 811 notice at least 2 full business days before digging starts.
The disc mulcher and the brush mower take the growth down. The tree puller lifts trees and stumps out of the ground, roots and all. An excavator comes in for ponds and lot leveling.
We haul the debris off or leave the mulch on the ground, whichever you chose. You get back a smooth lot, ready for the build or the pasture.
