Land Clearing, Mulching and Dirt Work in Rockledge

Rockledge runs west from the Indian River out to I-95, with Viera along its south side. Land clearing here starts with the city's permit list, which names tree removal and land disturbing activity. Then comes the cleared material, since city pickup covers yard trash only from the lot your home sits on.

BW Clearing is based in Melbourne, and Rockledge is part of our service area, about 20 road miles north. We do land clearing on house lots and larger tracts for homeowners and businesses. Our skid steer carries a disc mulcher or a tree puller, and we rent an excavator for dirt work. Call or text (904) 719-0443 for a free quote in writing.

Rockledge lots between the Indian River and I-95

U.S. 1 runs through the heart of Rockledge, with the Florida East Coast Railway beside it. Rockledge Drive follows the river side of the city. Barnes Boulevard heads west from U.S. 1 to I-95, and Fiske Boulevard meets I-95 at an interchange.

The Census Bureau counted 27,678 people here in 2020 and estimates 31,343 for 2025. Most homes are single-family houses. About one in six dates to the 1960s, and about one in five to the 2000s.

Rockledge subdivisions include Levitt Park, Marlin Manor, Three Meadows and Timbers West. An older yard and a vacant tract fall under the same city tree and grade rules.

Do you need a permit to remove trees in Rockledge?

Usually, yes. The city lists Tree City USA among its recognitions, and its code covers trees on any property in the city. Its FAQ says the permit needs a layout of your yard with every tree marked. The Building Division at City Hall issues these permits.

On a house lot, the city's permit page says four trees must remain after removal. The code counts trees from the city's recommended tree list. If fewer would remain, the code asks for a replacement tree for each one removed, planted within 30 days.

On land never developed under an approved site plan, the code bars tree removal without a permit. Trees that stay get fencing at the drip line, and machines and soil piles stay outside it. We plan the clearing work around those rules. The tree puller lifts each tree out roots and all.

The code also exempts some trees, with no permit or fee to remove them. The list names Brazilian pepper, melaleuca, Australian pine and chinaberry, among others. Our Brazilian pepper removal lifts the trunks out with the roots, and the disc mulcher takes smaller growth. The scrub and wetland rules below still apply.

Wet flatwoods sand and Rockledge's grade rules

The county soil survey maps more of Rockledge as Myakka sand than any other soil. It is a poorly drained flatwoods sand, and at its highest the water table sits about a foot down. Near the river, the survey maps pockets of Paola and Cocoa sand, which drain well. It also maps muck in low, ponded spots, such as Tomoka muck.

The city says its main flood threat is rain ponding in heavy storms. In a flood hazard area, its code counts filling and grading as development that needs a permit first. Clearing itself counts as land disturbing activity under the code. Unless the code excludes the job, that calls for an erosion and sedimentation control permit.

Raising or lowering a lot by a foot or more brings in the city's grade rules. On a single-family lot of an acre or less, muck and roots come out of the building footprint. Fill must contain no roots or plant matter, and it goes down in compacted layers of 12 inches or less. Other parcels need a report sealed by a professional engineer first.

Before that grade change, the owner documents that the parcel is not a wetland, or files the wetland permits. The city code also sends commercial and subdivision projects to the St. Johns River Water Management District for approval. Our site preparation starts with that plan, and we walk you through which permits apply to your lot.

Debris rules and scrub-jay habitat in Rockledge

City pickup takes branches cut to 5 feet or less, with each piece under 50 pounds. It does not cover land clearing on any other lot. When a contractor cuts your trees, the city says the contractor or the owner hauls the debris off.

The city code also prohibits open burning of yard trash in city limits unless City Council approves it. So the trees and brush either leave on a truck or get ground in place with forestry mulching. Our debris removal hauls the trunks and root balls off the lot.

Scrub habitat areas mapped in a 1991 city study need an environmental study before any clearing. Florida scrub-jays nest from about March 1 to June 30. The code bars construction within 150 feet of an active nest. Clearing within 25 feet of a gopher tortoise burrow also needs a permit from FWC, the state wildlife agency.

Questions We Hear Around Rockledge

A few of the questions we hear most around Rockledge. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (904) 719-0443

Is my lot under Rockledge rules or Brevard County rules?
ZIP code 32955 covers far more ground than the city, so a Rockledge address does not settle it. The city says to look up the parcel on the county property appraiser's site and check the taxing district. Inside the city, the Rockledge Building Division handles tree removal permits. Outside it, the county's Natural Resources Management office reviews land clearing permits.
Does a dead or leaning tree need a city permit in Rockledge?
The city code exempts trees that are no longer viable or are in danger of falling. State law adds a case for home lots. If an ISA certified arborist documents an unacceptable risk, the city cannot require a permit for that tree. Check with the Building Division before the tree puller comes out.
Can you clear a lot for a new house or shop in Rockledge?
Yes. We clear the pad and the access, and the plan says what stays. Under the grade rules, site work must finish within 60 days of the building permit unless the city allows more. A new driveway needs its own city permit, and work in the right-of-way needs Public Works approval.
What does land clearing cost in Rockledge?
Lot size and how thick the growth is matter most, along with the tree count and wet ground. In Rockledge, plan on hauling or mulching the debris, since the city bars open burning. We look at the lot and put a free quote in writing. Call or text (904) 719-0443 to set it up.
