Dirt and Gravel Driveways in Melbourne, FL

Gravel Driveways · Melbourne, FL

A firm way in and out of your land

A gravel driveway gives you a firm way in and out of rural land. BW Clearing builds new dirt and gravel driveways and access roads around Melbourne and across Brevard County. We grade the base first. Then we lay the material and press it down the way you ask.

Dirt and gravel driveways are common on rural land and construction sites. A new one often follows land clearing in Melbourne, once the lot is open. We also refresh old driveways that have rutted or washed out. Call or text (904) 719-0443 for a free quote.

How our gravel driveway installation works

Each driveway job starts with a visit to the site. We look at where the driveway should run and ask what will drive on it. A barn or shop driveway may need room for a truck and trailer to turn around. You get the plan and the price in a written quote.

If trees or palmettos stand in the path, we clear them first. Next we grade the base so rain runs off to the sides. On a raw lot, the driveway route is part of site preparation for a new house or barn.

After that, the material comes in. We lay it and press it firm. A firm, well-graded base is what carries the weight of a loaded truck. When you compare gravel driveway contractors, ask how they build the base.

Why do dirt driveways turn to mud in Brevard County?

The most common soil in Brevard County is Myakka sand, a flatwoods soil that drains slowly. From June through September, its water table can rise to within 18 inches of the surface. After a heavy rain, that ground is slow to soak up the water.

On ground like that, a bare dirt driveway stays soft after summer storms. Tires cut ruts, and low spots hold water. We raise those spots with fill through our excavating and dirt work, then add gravel or rock on top.

Drainage at the road matters too. Brevard County's code covers driveways that meet a county road. A driveway there must not interfere with drainage on the road or nearby land. Where a ditch runs along the road, the county's Public Works Department decides if the driveway needs a culvert pipe.

Regrading an old dirt or gravel driveway

Dirt and gravel driveways need a refresh from time to time. Rain and traffic wear ruts and potholes into the surface. Tires also push the gravel to the edges until the base shows through.

We regrade the old driveway and fill the ruts. Fresh material then goes on top where the old layer has thinned. The finished surface is smoother and sheds water again.

Puddles that stay after a rain are an early sign the driveway needs regrading. Water that sits on the surface softens the base under it. Call or text when the puddles start, before the ruts get deep.

How We Work

How a Job With BW Clearing Runs

From the first call or text to the finished work, here is how it goes.

1

Call or text

Call or text (904) 719-0443 and tell us where the land is and what you plan to do with it. A rough size helps too.

2

We look at the land

We come out to see the growth and how the machines can reach it. Then we put your free quote in writing.

3

The plan

We settle the plan for your lot, and we walk you through which permits apply to it. Florida law calls for a Sunshine 811 notice at least 2 full business days before digging starts.

4

The machine work

The disc mulcher and the brush mower take the growth down. The tree puller lifts trees and stumps out of the ground, roots and all. An excavator comes in for ponds and lot leveling.

5

The finished lot

We haul the debris off or leave the mulch on the ground, whichever you chose. You get back a smooth lot, ready for the build or the pasture.

Gravel Driveways Questions, Answered

Common questions about gravel driveways around Melbourne and the rest of the Space Coast. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

How much does a gravel driveway cost?
The price depends on the length and width of the driveway and the material you pick. Trees in the path or low, wet ground add work before the material goes down. We look at the site and put the price in writing. Call or text (904) 719-0443 for a free quote.
What material is best for a gravel driveway in Florida?
Crushed concrete, limerock, shell and gravel are all common in Florida. Each one looks and packs a little differently. The right pick depends on what drives on it and the look you want. We go over the options with you at the site.
What is the difference between a dirt driveway and a gravel driveway?
A dirt driveway is the ground itself, graded and packed firm. A gravel driveway adds a layer of rock or shell on top. Dirt can be enough for light use on high ground, while wet ground and heavy traffic call for gravel. We can also add gravel to a dirt driveway you already have.
Do I need a permit for a driveway in Brevard County?
Outside city limits, a driveway onto a county-maintained road needs a right-of-way permit from Brevard County Public Works. A driveway onto a state highway needs a connection permit from the Florida Department of Transportation. Inside city limits, ask the city's own permit office. We point you to the right office before work starts.
What if I want to pave the driveway later?
Many owners start with gravel and pave later. Until then, the gravel driveway gives you a firm way in. The paving is quoted separately by a paving contractor. Ask them what they want under it before you pick a material.
Do you build access roads for farms and job sites?
Yes. We build dirt and gravel access roads across rural land and into construction sites. If the route runs through woods, we clear the path first. If the road leads to a new barn site, we can also build the pole barn there.
