Excavating and Dirt Work in Melbourne, FL

Excavating and Dirt Work · Melbourne, FL

Above-ground excavating for level lots and new ponds

BW Clearing works as an excavating contractor for above-ground dirt work in Melbourne and across Brevard County. Our dirt work covers land grading, lot leveling, pond digging and spreading fill. A rented excavator handles the heavy digging and the big moves of earth. Dirt work often follows land clearing around Melbourne, so one company can take the lot from cleared to graded.

Our excavating stays above ground: we shape the land itself, and anything buried belongs to other trades. Grading choices start with the plan for the lot, which our site preparation and planning work lays out. Call or text (904) 719-0443, and we look at the lot and put a free quote in writing.

What We Handle

  • High spots cut down and the dirt moved to the low ones
  • Lot leveling and rough grading ahead of a new build
  • Pond digging and bank shaping with an excavator
  • Pond dirt spread on the same lot to raise low ground
  • Fill spread and leveled for a building pad
  • Root raking a cleared lot before grading
  • Land leveling for pastures and open ground
  • Rough grading that sheds rain away from the build site

Land grading and lot leveling on Brevard County ground

Land grading moves dirt from the high spots to the low spots until the ground sits where you want it. Lot leveling is the same work on a building lot, ahead of a new house or a barn. Rough grading shapes the ground close to the final lines your plan calls for.

Federal soil surveys first described the EauGallie soil at a Brevard County site. It covers large areas of central Florida and drains poorly. Its water table can sit 6 to 18 inches down for 1 to 4 months. On ground like that, a few inches of grade decide whether rain runs off or stands.

Raising a low lot with fill changes where water goes, on your land and on the lot next door. Outside city limits, the county code requires a land alteration permit for fill covering three-quarters of an acre or more. Inside Melbourne, the city's engineering department runs its own land alteration permit. We point you to the right office and walk you through what it asks for.

What goes into pond digging in Brevard County?

Pond digging starts with where the pond sits and what it is for. A pond can do two jobs: the hole holds water, and the dirt raises a pad or fills low ground. The excavator digs and shapes the banks, and we spread the dirt on the lot. Our pond construction page covers planning, depth and the county rules in full.

That shallow water table shapes pond work too. In a wet spell, a pond dig can reach water fast, and a dry spell drops the water table lower. Under the county code, water pumped from a dig cannot go onto other lots or into county drains without permits.

Outside city limits, the county code also sets the shape of a private pond. Near the edge, banks drop at most 1 foot for every 5 feet out, down to 5 feet of water. No part may run deeper than 12 feet below the average water level. Any St. Johns River Water Management District permit or exemption goes on file with the county before the dig.

Excavation services that stay above ground

Our excavation services work the surface of the land: cutting, filling, spreading and leveling dirt, plus digging ponds. Stumps come out first, roots and all, as part of clearing the lot. Root raking then pulls the smaller roots out of the top layer of soil before grading. Grading or digging within 25 feet of a gopher tortoise burrow needs a state wildlife permit first.

Shaped ground is ready for a dirt or gravel driveway or the pad for a pole barn. A concrete contractor pours any slab that goes on top. The clearing and the pad come from the same company that puts up the building.

How We Work

How a Job With BW Clearing Runs

From the first call or text to the finished work, here is how it goes.

1

Call or text

Call or text (904) 719-0443 and tell us where the land is and what you plan to do with it. A rough size helps too.

2

We look at the land

We come out to see the growth and how the machines can reach it. Then we put your free quote in writing.

3

The plan

We settle the plan for your lot, and we walk you through which permits apply to it. Florida law calls for a Sunshine 811 notice at least 2 full business days before digging starts.

4

The machine work

The disc mulcher and the brush mower take the growth down. The tree puller lifts trees and stumps out of the ground, roots and all. An excavator comes in for ponds and lot leveling.

5

The finished lot

We haul the debris off or leave the mulch on the ground, whichever you chose. You get back a smooth lot, ready for the build or the pasture.

FAQ

Excavating and Dirt Work Questions, Answered

Common questions about excavating and dirt work around Melbourne and the rest of the Space Coast. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (904) 719-0443

How much does excavating and dirt work cost?
The price depends on how much dirt moves and how far it travels on the lot. Pond size, wet ground, machine access and any fill brought in change it too. We see the lot first, then write up a free quote. Call or text (904) 719-0443 to set it up.
Do I need a permit to dig a pond in Brevard County?
The county code requires a private lake permit once the ponds on a parcel reach three-quarters of an acre. Smaller ponds still follow its rules on slopes and setbacks. Hauling the dirt off the property can bring in a land alteration permit. Inside a city, ask that city's office which permits apply, and we walk you through them.
Does grading or pond digging need an 811 call first?
In most cases, yes. Florida's one-call law counts grading and pond digging as excavation. It requires a Sunshine 811 notice at least two full business days before work starts. Private lines you put in, like a water line to a barn, are worth pointing out to us.
Do you do underground work like septic or utility lines?
No. We keep to above-ground excavating and the shape of the land. A licensed septic installer handles septic systems, and a utility contractor does the underground work. Footings and foundations for a building belong to other trades as well.
Can the dirt from a new pond raise my building pad?
Often, yes. Dirt from a pond dig can build up a pad or fill low spots on the same lot. How far it goes depends on the size of the pond and the ground you want to raise. Your plans set the pad height, and we spread the dirt to match.
What is the difference between land clearing and excavating?
Land clearing takes the trees and brush off the lot, roots and all. Excavating moves the dirt underneath to level the lot or dig a pond. Most lots get cleared first, and the dirt work follows.
