Land Clearing, Mulching and Dirt Work in St. Cloud

St. Cloud grew from 58,964 people in the 2020 Census to an estimated 74,960 in 2025. A bigger town needs more homesites, and many start as overgrown raw land. Much of the open ground around town is flatwoods, with slash pine over saw palmetto on flat sand. Before a house or barn goes in, the pine and palmetto come out, roots and all.

BW Clearing is a land clearing company based in Melbourne, and St. Cloud is part of our service area. The town sits about an hour west of our base on US 192. We do land clearing here for homesites, barns, shops and pasture. Call or text (904) 719-0443 for a free quote.

What is the ground like on a St. Cloud lot?

The federal soil survey maps Smyrna and Myakka fine sand under most of the land around St. Cloud. Both are poorly drained flatwoods sands on slopes of 2 percent or less. Smyrna's water table sits within 18 inches of the surface for one to four months in most years. The Smyrna series was first described in Osceola County in 1976.

Native cover on these sands is slash and longleaf pine over saw palmetto and gallberry. On palmetto flats, forestry mulching grinds that growth where it stands, and the mulch stays on the sand as cover. In the low spots, the survey shows ponded sands and Samsula muck, rated very poorly drained. We look for the low ground before any machine goes in.

East Lake Toho covers about 20 square miles on the north edge of town. The South Florida Water Management District manages its level as part of the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes. Lots near the shore can sit in a high-risk FEMA flood zone, where the city sets special building requirements. The city's floodplain page links a map that shows the zone for any parcel.

City or county: who sets the clearing rules in St. Cloud?

Inside city limits, the land development code calls St. Cloud a Tree City USA community. It asks for a permit or a land clearing authorization before work starts on a site. The code lists an exemption for Category I invasive plants in Central Florida, and Brazilian pepper is one. Brazilian pepper removal is part of our work across the area.

Much of the land around town is unincorporated Osceola County. The county's zoning FAQ says a permit is typically required for the removal of trees, and for construction in wetlands. St. Cloud can annex county land that takes city water or sewer. Check which side of the line your lot is on.

We walk you through which permits apply to your lot as part of site preparation. Around trees you keep, a city permit can bar heavy equipment from a protected zone, and we plan for that. The office that issues the permit has the final word.

Growth and cattle country around St. Cloud

Most of St. Cloud's homes are new: more than half were built in 2000 or later, per the Census Bureau. The city expects 60 percent more people over the next 20 years. On the northeast end of town, Osceola County says its Narcoossee Community Park serves a growing local community. Downtown keeps its brick streets, and the city has a historic preservation overlay district.

Osceola County is cattle country. It ranked first in Florida for cattle and calf sales in the 2022 Census of Agriculture. Pasture covers about 403,000 acres of the county's farmland. The city's Peghorn Nature Park takes its name from cattle raised in the area in the 1900s.

East of town, US 192 runs out to Holopaw, where it meets US 441. Pasture that goes unmowed can grow back in palmetto and brush. Bush hogging cuts that growth down, small trees up to about 5 inches included. Land clearing takes a homesite down to open ground, ready for the next step.

How a land clearing job in St. Cloud runs

It starts with a call or text and a look at the lot. We mark what stays and what goes, and we note where the wet ground sits. Then the plan and a free quote go to you in writing.

Timing matters on flatwoods ground. The National Weather Service finds 68 percent of the yearly rain in Orlando and Melbourne falls May through October. Lots tend to be firmer in the drier months, so we talk through timing with you.

The tree puller on our skid steer lifts trees and stumps out, roots and all. For a pond or a level pad, we bring in a rented excavator. Debris either gets mulched in place or hauled off the lot.

Communities and areas we serve around St. Cloud: Downtown St. Cloud, East Lake Toho, Narcoossee Road, Neptune Road, Stevens Plantation, Old Hickory Tree Road, Old Canoe Creek Road, Harmony, Holopaw, US 192 corridor.

St. Cloud FAQ

Questions We Hear Around St. Cloud

A few of the questions we hear most around St. Cloud. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (904) 719-0443

Do I need a permit to clear land in St. Cloud?
It depends on which side of the city line your lot sits on. Inside city limits, the code asks for a permit or a clearing authorization before site work, with a few exemptions. In unincorporated Osceola County, the county lists tree removal among work that typically needs a permit. Ask the office before work starts, and we help you sort out which one applies.
What does land clearing cost in St. Cloud?
The price depends on the acreage and how thick the pine and palmetto are. Wet Smyrna sand and tight access from the road change it. So does the choice between hauling debris off and mulching it in place. Call or text (904) 719-0443, and we look at the job and put a free quote in writing.
Can you clear a lot near East Lake Toho that stays wet?
It depends on what the low ground turns out to be. Ponded spots can be wetland, and state rules call for an environmental resource permit before work in wetlands. Outside city limits, Osceola County also lists construction in wetlands among work that typically needs a permit. We mark the wet ground in the plan and clear what the rules allow.
Do you work in Harmony and Holopaw too?
Yes. The unincorporated land east of town, out to Holopaw, is part of our service area, and so is Harmony. Those areas follow Osceola County rules instead of the city's. Send us the parcel's location when you call or text, and we look at the job.
What if my land has gopher tortoise burrows?
State law protects gopher tortoises and their burrows. The state wildlife agency, FWC, counts any work within 25 feet of a burrow as a disturbance. Disturbing a burrow takes an FWC relocation permit first. Tell us about any burrows when you call, and we plan the clearing around the rules.
